I have the honour to recommend that the salary

drawn by Mr. G. W. Avenell, Armourer Sergeant, Police Department and Volunteer Corps, be advanced from the present scale of £220

£240 to the scale £240 ricing to £260 by £10 triemially, and that

Mr. Avenell be allowed to draw £250 from the 1st. January, 1918.

lir. Avenell's service dates from Miny, 1906, and he

has been on his maximum of £240 since 1909. He is a highly skilled

artificer and the increase suggested will bring him into line with

Mr. A. Lane, Assistant Engineer and Station Officer, Fire Brigade,

549 regarding whom I addressed your predecessor in my despatch No. 21

of the 22nd. January, 1914.

I shall be glad of a reply by telegraph as in

alteration in the Estimates is involved.
